“Moroccan caffè”

When I visited Italy a couple months ago, I often heard people ordering “Moroccan caffè” or “caffe shakerato”. I was curious to know what it was exactly.

The manager of L’Oro Del Ticino, an amazing bar and restaurant owned by two amiable young men; the twin brothers (Gemelli), in Cuggiono; was nice enough to prepare a Moroccan caffè for me, and give me the recipe.

“Start by brewing a good shot of espresso coffee, pour it in a cocktail shaker, add some vanilla extract, ice cubes and shake it for a few minutes” he explained with a charming Italian accent, while doing all that.

My “Moroccan caffè” was served in a small glass, cold and foamy. It tasted very aromatic and strong. It was 3 pm in the afternoon, I had just had a generous lunch prepared by chef  De Pascal, and my eye lids were falling! After I had a few sips of my “Caffe”, my eyes were wide open and my left foot was jiggling!!

“You don’t like your caffè?”  he asked, looking at my half full glass of coffee. I explained as politely as I could, that it was really good, but I rather not have that much caffeine in the afternoon.

Saying I don’t drink coffee in Italy, is like saying “I am disabled”! Drinking coffee several times a day is deeply instituted in the Italian culture. It is almost a shame not to drink coffee.

If you are an American visiting Italy, make sure you order “Caffè Americano”, which refers to a full cup of brewed coffee instead of a shot of espresso that you can almost drink in one sip! Or, you can order a refreshing “Moroccan caffè”! I am not sure where the appellation came from, but it’s definitely a drink worth trying.
